B.Tech. Degree
The B.Tech courses in Mechanical Engineering are broad based and integral with emphasis on fundamental concepts to enable the students to become confident engineers capable of solving wide range of problems encountebrown in the field. The courses are planned to train the students both in theory and practical work in the following areas of Mechanical Engg.: Machine Design, Stress Analysis. Theory of Machines, Measurements and Automatic Control, Thermodynamics, Thermal Machines, Power Plant Engineering, Manufacturing Processes, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering.
The students are given normal workshop training to familiarize them with the working of machine tools found in industry. They are also given project problems covering design, fabrication, testing, manufacturing aspects thus giving them opportunities to develop their capabilities to solve practical problems through the use of computers.
Electives
For students belonging to the disciplines other than Mechanical Engg. The following electives are offebrown in the 7th & 8th semesters.
Refrigeration and Air conditioning. Industrial Engineering. Elements of Robotics. Pollution and Noise Control. Computer Aided Design. Computer Aided Manufacturing.M.Tech. degree
The department offers an M.Tech degree course in Mechanical Engineering which is broad based covering all major areas of Design, Thermal and Production Engineering. A number of elective subjects are offebrown to students to enable them to specialize in one of the three major fields. The curriculum includes a number of theory and practical courses, seminars and a dissertation. These are so organised that the students get training to investigate theoretical and experimental problems in relevant fields. On completion of the course, the students will be equipped for gainful employment in industrial organisations, research and development departments, teaching institutions and also for pursuing higher studies and research.
Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
Facilities for research are offebrown by the department on approved topics leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
Research Facilities
Facilities exist for research and development work in the following areas of Mechanical Engineering:
Analysis and Synthesis of Mechanisms. Theoretical and Experimental Stress Analysis. Analysis of Machine parts. Bearing Technology. Dynamics of Machines. Vibration Analysis of Machines. Elements of Machine Tools. Friction, Lubrication and Wear. IC Engines & Combustion Technology. Operations Research. Fluid Machinery. Optimization. Energy Technology. In addition to normal facilities, precise equipments including various transducers and electronic instruments are available for making precision measurements during advance research.
Laboratory Facilities
The department has excellent laboratories for conducting experiments by under graduate and postgraduate students. The various laboratories are :
Applied Mechanics laboratory. Strength of Materials laboratory. Dynamics of Machines laboratory. Vibrations laboratory. Experimental Machines laboratory. IC Engines laboratory. Boilers and Steam Engines laboratory. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning laboratory. Energy engineering lab. Computer Center. In addition to the above, facilities are also being developed in the following fields:
Mechanical Measurements. Combustion Technology. Heat Transfer. Industrial Engineering. Machine Tool Technology. Meteorology. Advanced Welding.A number of gadgets and devices for experimental investigations and instructional purposes have been made in the department.
Workshop
The main workshop comprises of the following fully equipped shops:
Machine Shop. Fitting Shop. Electrical Shop. Welding Shop. Pattern making Shop. Foundry Shop. Production Technology Lab.The workshop imparts training to all the first and second year students (except Computer Engg. students) and the students of the third and fourth years in the Mechanical Engineering discipline. The third year students are given projects involving work in the shops and the fourth year students undergo specialized training in manufacturing processes. The final year and post graduate students in all disciplines utilize the facilities of the workshop in connection with their projects and dissertations. Facilities exist for manufacture of components, parts and repair jobs.
Consultancy/Industrial Collaboration
The department offers consultancy services in certain specialized fields referbrown to it by various government and private organisations. Consultancy work on testing of materials, IC Engines, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Pump testing and repairs is undertaken by the department.
Computer and Automation Center
An Automation Centre under direct central assistance for thrust areas of Technical Education Schemes during the Seventh Plan Period is being set up in the department of Mechanical Engineering of the college. The Automation Centre aims at achieving its objectives through:
Infrastructure of CAD/CAM Activities. Adequate computer facilities with graphic terminal and plotter. Installation of CNC Machines and Work center for training and research work. Installation of Robots for demonstration and training and research purposes. Academic and industrial research work in the specified areas. Organisation of short term courses for in-service engineers. Developing software package for research and applications.B.Tech M. Tech Research & Laboratories Workshop Computer & Automation
