B.Tech.
The B.Tech. courses in Civil Engineering are broad
based designed to introduce students to a wide range of problems encountered
in the field. A large number of electives subjects are offered to enable a
student to study the areas of his special interest, in depth. The main areas
with which students are made familiar are:
Electives
For students belonging to disciplines
other than Civil Engg., the following electives are offered in
the 7th and 8th
semesters:
M.Tech. Degree
Admissions are made to M.Tech. degree courses in
Civil Engineering in the following three
specialisations:
Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (Geotechnology)
This
course has been designed to provide the students with a higher degree of competence
in designing and constructing independently, major Civil Engineering works
involving the use of advanced theorectical and applied applied knowledge of
Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. Instructions are imparted to cover
the field of Geotechnology but special emphasis is laid on Rock Mechanics
coverin the behaviour of rocks in the field as well as the study of properties
of rocks in the laboratory.
Structural Engineering
& Constructional Techniques
This course has
been developed to provide the students with a mathematical and practical background
on the analysis, design and construction of modern structures. Along with
this, the students are made conversant with the recent developments in the
field of construction materials, design methods and techniques of construction.Special
emphasis is laid on concrete technology, composite materials and analysis
and design of steel and concrete structures.
Water Resources Engineering
The course has
been developed and designed with the aim to impart training in the various
areas of Water Resources Engineering such as water resources planning and
system engineering, surface and ground water hydrology, design of hydraulic
structures atc. so as to develop the competence of the students to tacle the
complex problems of water resources engineering in various organisations of
State Governments as well as National Organisations of repute.
Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
Facilities for research areoffered by the department
on approved topics leading to the degree of Doctor of Philsophy. 12 faculty
members are registered to Ph.D. programmes.
Laboratory Facilities
The department has excellent laboratory facilities
for conducting experimental work by both under-
graduate and post-graduate students. The major laboratories
are:
* Soil Mechanics
* Foundation Engineering
* Rock Mechanics
* Structural Engineering
* Concrete Technology
* Fluid Mechanics
* Irrigation Engineering
* Surveying
* Highway Engineering
* Public Health Engineering
* Geology
A computer laboratory has been set up. The computer
laboratory has been strengthened with the procurement of more computers.
Research
Facilities
In addition to normal facilities, latest and precise
equipment is available for conducting advanced research
in Rock Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Water Resources Engg., Structural
Engg. and Environmental Engg.
A large number of post-graduate students take up various experimental works for their dissertation utilizing these facilities.
The department is equipped with a high pressure triaxial testing system, load and displacement transducer, field testing units, rock cutting equipments and facilities for conducting research under controlled temperature for long periods of time. A large number of electronic instruments are also available for precision measurements.
Facilities are also available for conducting advanced research in the field of Concrete and Structural Engineering on the following topics. The facility of non-destructive testing of concrete is also available with the concrete lab.
The irrigation and hydraulics Laboratory is well equipped for undertaking research works in varied problems of Hydraulic Engineering. Hydraulic testing facilities have been created for models testing of barrages, river models and other hydraulic structures.
Laboratory facilities also exist for model tests for design of stilling basins for low and high Froude Numbers for outlet works. The laboratory has got two tilting bed flumes to undertake research in the area of sediment transport and hydraulic structures.
Research work in the areas of package plants for treatment of waste water and aeration techniques is being conducted in Public Health Engg. Laboratory.
Consultancy/lndustrial Collaboration
Facilities exist for providing consultancy of advice in the following:
Miscellaneous Facilities
The Rock Mechanics Unit has facilities for conducting field loading test (plate
load test, flat jack test, rock drilling etc.) for various purposes involving
the estimation of the strength of rocks.
The department workshop is well equipped for the fabrication of special equipment, apparatus and various models. A large number of items of equipment have been designed and fabricated by the department. Some of these are sophisticated nature and can be used for accurate measurements in research. A few of the important items fabricated are:
